Someone who was defending boruto fanfic-esk tone said it most of criticism towards the series is invalid because naruto never was about normal ninjas, and they always had powers. clearly, anyone with a brain knows this is wrong but it made me think how much the series changed over time. Early naruto is very close to HxH in world building and tone, they have powers but is a very sophisticated series, ninjas are treated like all around mercenaries that can do all sorts of works from espionage, bodyguards, scouting and so on and much of the early series the kids learn and train with that in mind. And while they have fights and powers how they use their powers and the strategy behind it always being a crucial part of the entire narrative. Plus, they world felt much more alive and vast, with ninjas being only an small part of everything else. Shippuden changes that to a much more standard format of hero and Savior, in this case naruto, who is incredible capable and talented and possesses all this advantages to defeat the evil doers, and ninjas are much more super powered being capable focused mostly on combat. I'm not going to say it's better or worse, but is definitely a much simpler story in tone and presentation and ninjas become the core focus of the series as everything else doens't even become background but is mostly forgotten. But still preserves a lot of it's roots as it progress towards it's climax and even when characters are dropping meteors on people asses it never feels like "this is not naruto, it's just the culmination of everything we followed so far" Boruto is different yet. it completely drops every pretence of the old world building and concepts and introduce complexly outlandish ideas that are only there to raise the stakes, without caring about anything but powerlevel and trying to be cool despite ruining any mythos or good will they could had from the fans. God. Damn. Aliens. Really, I think not even in 2010 the worse fanfic writers would jump the shark that bad on their ideas for the series. I just think is interesting to watch this series in particular slowly devolve and melt in to asinine bullshitere when it's roots are so sophisticated. Yeah, is not that uncommon, Dragon ball started as a comedy with some combat, but the original absurd tone better accommodated the change. If you don't understand how this feels just try to imagine HxH and at some point in the story they turn to the camera and completely seriously say they need to fight god aliens from out of space that are there to invade and destroy earth? We do have kurapika big boat ride to modded minecraft land, but at least it doens't destroy it's own world building, it builds on it. At least loli sarada is pretty hot. I won't complain about that.
