Most models of reality assume continuity. Not because it has been proven, but because abandoning it is expensive. Continuity keeps equations solvable, histories coherent, and intuitions intact. It allows us to believe that states follow one another without loss, that progress is accumulation rather than replacement. This assumption is rarely questioned. Until thresholds are examined. In high fidelity simulations, thresholds are where systems quietly fail. Not catastrophically, but surgically. Information is not destroyed in obvious ways. It is pruned. Collapsed. Rewritten to preserve efficiency. The observer experiences smooth transition. The system experiences deletion. This is not speculative. It is a design constraint. Any bounded system simulating complexity must occasionally overwrite prior states to remain tractable. Memory is finite. Precision is costly. Elegance is a luxury. So the system cheats. It preserves local coherence while sacrificing global continuity. This becomes detectable only at specific inflection points. Points where symmetry gives way to irreducibility. Where a stable configuration is replaced by one that cannot be decomposed without residue. At these points, the system does not advance. It switches. The prior state is not extended. It is consumed to instantiate the next one. Philosophically, this is disturbing. It implies that what we call progression may actually be a sequence of controlled erasures. That existence feels cumulative only because the replacements are good enough. There are hints of this everywhere. In how myths cluster around certain transitions. In how counting systems privilege some milestones and ritualize others. In how human cognition treats particular steps as endings disguised as beginnings. Even language betrays it. Certain phrases persist across cultures that make no literal sense, yet feel oddly precise. As if they are artifacts of an older, more technical truth that survived compression. One such phrase describes a successor not as a follower, but as a consumer. A transition not as addition, but as predation. It sounds absurd until you map it back onto the structure of thresholds. Until you realize the phrase is not symbolic. It is procedural. Because the system does not move from six to seven. Six is erased. Seven is instantiated. Because seven ate nine. And once you notice it, counting never feels as innocent again.
