Gon realistically would NOT have beaten meruem pre rose considering gons fight vs pitou had no tactics involved and Meruem wont just jump at him like Neferpitou did out of pure instinct and Meruem would prolly tank most ja jan kens anyways since he took a zero hand straight on and was left with minor damage or straight up dodge them since gon just gained a high aura reserve but not the skills he would've acquired in his life time So yea your friend was right to look at you that way, one of my issues with the HxH community is how much they overestimate gon and killua sure they have HUGE talent but that's it realistically they aren't even top of the verse, people forget how big the HxH region is and that's not even counting the dark continent or the island the black whale is sailing towards that is ALLEGEDLY new but i doubt that honestly we might see a new civilization there and after a quarrel that civilization will help beyond in the DC
